![]() ![]() The world he built obviously didn't have everyone happy in it, though I wish that came up more in dialogue.īut I think the biggest thing that's difficult to avoid is that the third semester feels very bolted onto a story that already had its narrative and emotional climax. One of my favorite moments in the game is Joker and Maruki's confrontations at LeBlanc and Joker casually tossing the calling card - you really felt like Maruki had no ill will, and I like that he wasn't an omnipotent god but a flawed person trying to address complex social problems like a math puzzle to solve. I liked his Confidant and I'll never forget the feeling of storming his Palace while I Believe plays - I even went and fought some Shadows last minute to get some more Personas and let the music soak in. Maruki was generally an interesting character as well and a good contrast to the other Palace villains. I love his Confidant and his role in the third semester as an uneasy ally is great, especially when he resolves to defeat Maruki even knowing it will mean his death. Getting the first part out of the way - I fucking loved Akechi in this game after not caring much for him in vanilla. ![]() I would say the story additions I am more mixed on. I really enjoyed revisiting the original P5 story with these. Mementos is much more enjoyable this time around with the music and Alarm Fusion mechanic, Showtimes are fun, Baton Passes are even better, Darts is a pretty fun minigame, you can work on social stats better this time around, you get the picture. The gameplay additions are pretty much all positive in my book. So all that established, let's talk about the additions of Royal. The characters, the music, the battling, the big bosses, the voice acting (I've only done Japanese on my vanilla and Royal playthroughs, I have an unfinished English NG+ vanilla playthrough and I intend for my Royal NG+ to be English as well), it's all just very special to me. I'll drop games I'm not super into less than 5 hours in, so P5, as an experience, just works for me. ![]() So if I could put in 132 hours in Royal after already playing vanilla P5 (and even having an unfinished NG+ on P5 vanilla with a good 20+ hours or so added on), it really meant I loved the game deeply. I also consider Tears Of The Kingdom one of my all time favorite games (TOTK spoilers: check the avatar if you don't believe me), and there are a lot of flaws you can point out with it - but the experience of the game and the feeling it gave me is paramount to that. but it kept me deeply entertained for 132 hours, and that's about as high of praise as I can give. It's a very flawed, sometimes thematically incoherent game. But I also think that sometimes both of these can be true, but you can still love it for what it is. That either you notice the flaws more or that your tastes changed. ![]() There's always a hesitation when you revisit your favorite show, or movie, or game or what have you, that it might not live up to the memories you had of it. So years later, how do I feel about the game, all in? and it took me much longer than vanilla, I can tell you that. Well, as of last night, the deed is done. I played it on and off throughout this year, until finally deciding to spend July playing nothing but P5R, with the goal being to either finish it or get a good chunk of it done by July as I tend to find Persona games are better played all at once than in the background. I was very happy when the game was announced for Switch and I managed to snag it on sale during Cyber Monday last year. While as the years go on I've soured in certain story elements and writing choices, I've been waiting for an opportune moment to play through Royal - I didn't want to spend another 100+ hours on my PS4 and carving out time for the game was difficult. I knew it would be one of my all time favorites before I even beat it. Flaws and all, it's a game that resonated with me. I spent the next month playing it nonstop and 100 hours later I beat it. Whereas P4's opening hours were a slog for me to get through, P5's stylish casino caper was incredibly captivating. But when Joker was revealed for Smash, I thought "well, no better time to play it than now." I started it around late December, and I was instantly hooked. You won't be surprised to hear I did that with Persona 5. I even did that with Persona 3 and 4 before finally playing them. I was always the guy who bought games on sale and let them rot in my backlog for years. I first played P5 years ago, around December 2018/January 2019. Let's see if I can put this thread into words in a way that makes sense. ![]()
